The Tragedy of Time & Place
You can do everything in your power to work with the time and place you’ve found yourself in, but still fail. How do we cope with this harsh reality?
(Byousoku) 5 Centimeters per Second, the 2007 anime film from Makoto Shinkai (Weathering with You, The Garden of Words) is probably overlooked for the creator’s later slice of life/romance work, Your Name, which shares a similar structure and themes, however 5 Centimeters per Second probably discusses and explains those themes in a greater way. The most notable are time and place; how we can be with the right person at the wrong time, or with the wrong person in the right place, and so on. The anime movie explains this through Takaki Toono and Akari Shinohara, a pair of childhood friends who’s romance is broken apart by school transfers, leading each down different paths in life. Takaki gets caught up in the dream of the right place at the right time, having found it through dedication before, but grows depressed when he fails to again. Part of the reason is will; our decisions play a role, however small, in the chaos of the world which shapes us. That opposing will ends up being Akari, who uses those happy memories to change her life, rather than stagnate. In other words, she makes the best of what she has (like the place and time), “doing all we can do.” Through these conflicting characters and their chance meetings, we learn a valuable lesson about how people meet, and how they split apart.

Great closing reflection as well. And this is why Rebecca sacrifices herself. The final mission was overall to change the world in the end of she could do what change the world close to her. And that is why we sacrifice and that is why we carry the load and that is why we bleed willingly for others. We may not change the world, but maybe we can change a couple worlds closest to us. Love is the answer.

"Glovebox in a car next to you can have a gun" - spoken like a real dumbfuckinstani. Civilized countries have a thing called gun control. In my country for example I needed to practice shooting with air rifle and have a minimum 47 out of 50 in a competition every 4 months for 2 years to get a licence to practice sport with a .22. 2 years of championships with .22 getting a minimum of 47 out of 50 and I got the permission to get a .380 rifle to practice benchrest shooting. .380 benchrest the .22 pistol and air rifle for another four years and I gott the permission to conceal carry .38 pitbull revolver. Thats it. No 9mm no .45 Those are considered war calibers and unless you are police or military u cant use them

A quick note that the "eyes in front" speech is dub only, but it's truly amazing, the writers perfectly embodied the characters, and I love it. it was put in as the western airing of the bathhouse episode had to have a fair amount of cutting and censoring to have it air, so they fill a little time at the start with a speech and some recycled footage. I think about those lines fairly regularly. " You know why people have eyes in the front? Because they have to move forward to see the landscape in the distance. If you had eyes in back all you could see is your home town getting farther away, you can't move forward like that. If your eyes are in front what you see in the distance keeps getting closer. That's what lets people move forward." It truly embodies Kamina's spirit, reject the past and push forward into the future you want.

Been a little bit since I’ve commented. As someone who just went through the worst year of my life in my first year of college, It completely changed me as a person. I broke myself down completely and who I am and I’m in the process of picking up the pieces. I’m back home and in between a lot of shit in my life. Seeing old friends again felt so weird. I’m an entirely different person now and been through struggles they’ll never fully know. Even if there are the brief moments of similarity with the past I realize it’ll never be the same. Everyone else feels like they moved forward while I got stuck. But I’m ok with it. I’m healing and focusing on myself. Because that’s what I need rn. And I have new friends with an extremely deep connection. As always your vid’s give me a lot to think about. Love your work, keep it up!

Honestly this video is a good example of how to get through a breakup. At least for me… not being given a reason for a relationship you gave your all in. Months after here I am still unable to delete the photos or burn the letters we would write. But that’s okay, I don’t look at the photos often but at some point maybe I will need to seek them out in a low point to look back on a time in which I was loving life. Or maybe at some point I will look back at them and laugh, not needed the boost in ego but rather conveniently stumbling across old letters and photos of an old flame.

This is probably my favourite video of yours since i subscribed (that honestly could have been 6 months or a year ago at this point, time eludes me lmao. I wish I could give better feedback especially when it comes to the presentation angle, but concepts like presentation and aesthetics and me are like oil and water. It felt very clean though, I loved how smoothly the analysis followed the story of the movie, even if you weren't the one who planted such ideas into the film, you still deserve credit for your excellent analysis. It's one thing understanding the themes and messages, but being able to so eloquently put them into word is never ever easy. I think it helped that the whole place and time stuff is something pretty much everyone ever can relate to, and your personal stories at the end always add a lot to the videos and give even more food for thought. It's such an important message to spread too I think. I'd never really considered place and time and how limitations breed convenience which ultimately leads to the connections we make. I'm not entirely sure how old you are but it feels like I'm just a few paces behind you in life really, I'm at university and don't get out much. It's not because I don't have friends, I just guess I'm squandering the convenience I have right now of living in the same building as some really fun people and having my closest friends only be a 10 minute walk away. I always feel like I'm waiting for somebody to come save me and when there's a potentially great moment I let it pass me by because it requires my input to get the ball rolling. But in just a couple of weeks I'm moving out of a university accommodation building and into a rented house, from 300 people I can just bump into as I walk to the corner shop to just me and three other okay friends. I have so much convenience right now and there are some acquaintances I wish I'd have spend more time with but now I've only got 2 weeks and then I'll have to message them and plan a hang-out rather than just bumping into them in the courtyard and being able to sit together for a couple of hours. But now I've watched this video, I'm gonna try to make what I can out of the tiny amount of right place right time we have left, and I think it's a great idea to share to people, especially younger ones who haven't yet experienced the tragedy of place and time to a degree that they are left with big regrets. Anyway amazing stuff as always PV, take care of yourself :)

Death Note does not address questions of morality of crime and punishment in-depth because it's ultimately just another shonen series about rivals competing, despite the anime's extremely pretentious directing. It was written for 13-year old kids, so of course all the major characters operate in idealistic absolutes and never actually try to address systematic causes of crime, and their morality is never substantially challenged. This is why I like Code Geass better, it actually addresses a lot of things people like to pretend Death Note addresses. I like your analysis of the police force in the story though

As someone who's experienced true love with a woman I never even met who was quite literally across the earth, this video certainly resonated. There's only so much time you can give when the distance is immense. Against both of our logic, we obnoxiously tried to make it work, and we experienced the most beautiful, yet painful long distance relationship I could have asked for for. 18 months that flew by in the blink of an eye. But the pain, energy, time, resources, financial burden, stress was all too immense for me to handle any more, so I unfortunately had to walk away. Recently I've been like the archer character, but this video has certainly helped me gain insight and helped me want to be the surfer girl. Truly embrace the oppurtunities you have in the present, while still occasionally looking back fondly on the past. Thank you for your video and for existing :)

I would consider Makishima's alignment to be Chaotic Good. It might seem a strange choice to call such a cold blooded murderer Good but after taking time to think about why he spent so much time undermining people's belief in the Sibyl system it became clear that had he skipped that step, not exposing the flaws in the system and simply gone about destroying the foundation of it then that would have meant certain doom for all the brainwashed citizens who had no time to consider thinking for themselves. Ironically by using terrible criminals as pawns to expose the cracks in Sibyls enforcement it would have resulted in more people being prepared for the downfall of society. Of course bringing about the downfall of society is inherently comes with very terrible consequences, that is what accounts for Akane's resistance of his plan also being Good despite the fact that it requires upholding an Evil status quo. Because both sides are fighting with an ends justify the means mentality it can thus be stated objectively that the winning side is Good and the losing side is Evil, but on an individual level both Akane and Makishima are Good until somebody wins while the collective group they represent are both Evil.

I would consider Kogami's alignment to be Neutral Good, he tries to do Good his own way, he doesn't try to destroy the system or uphold it, he just has a feeling of responsibility to do what is right now matter whether it be Lawful or not, because of that he constantly has to keep moving and running away to avoid fighting against the system he acts outside of, this is true even after leaving Japan as he drifts from place to place getting involved in other people's fights and doing what he thinks is right even if he has nothing to gain.

I would consider Akane to be Lawful Good/Light on an alignment spectrum. Overall I think that the Sibyl system or at least the status quo that it upholds is firmly in Lawful Evil, and that was the case even before learning the truth, a system that judges people by their thoughts and not their actions is extremely unjust and is also the root cause for every single other flaw within the system the very foundation of society under the Sibyl system is flawed. The reasons Akane has for supporting the system are not wrong, and if she was not willful enough to try to reform the system then I couldn't consider her to be Good, but there is value in trying to reform a system which is flawed at it's very foundation, as the consequences of destroying it may be to great to bear. Her motivations are in the right place and although she cooperates with Evil she does not do so cowardly out of fear, but rather conditionally out of compromise.

So this is the Communist utopia, of course it's not true Communism it never is but once Sybil is able to provide equity for all and not just the majority, it will be by turning everyone into husks that do not desire freewill at all. Putting aside the problems that would presumably go away in the end (such as the dominators that either don't work at all or make people explode like an overinflated balloon depending on their level of stress, the sight of which no doubt creates even more targets for enforcement) Let's say enforcement was a thing of the past, then what? The people of Japan either live short stagnant lives as zombies being left behind by the rest of the world, or more likely an outside power realizes how poorly defended the country is, walks in, destroys the Sybil system and maybe their unmanned food production, then simply leaves the country and waits for it to collapse. Of course the Sybil system could go on the offensive like in any good dystopian fiction, but all that would accomplish is humanity being totally wiped out by the end, people are already becoming cyborgs in psycho pass but they lack the technology to create cybernetic brains yet, once they have those there will likely be no reason for people with cloudy brains to exist. Before long this would inevitably all lead to the same collective conscious outcome Charles was attempting to accomplish in Code: Geass

By some chance, this video found me, and I couldn't be more glad it did. This is the first video from you I've watched and I think it was beautifully put together. Each part, although from the same film, tells almost a different, but relevant, story. All the parts had their own messages and learning points, which alone, could be enough of a talking point already, but put together, form a bigger lesson at the end that ties everything up. The summaries of life, it's setbacks, opportunities and the will of spirit were clearly communicated, and it really helps to clear up the fog of thoughts that one might have keeping from taking the next step. The Sybil system is completely flawed since being stressed out is the only crime in the world. It is even admitted in season 2 that some people are born as "latent-criminals" which seems to have been the circumstance in episode 1 season 1 as well. One day somebody gets scanned and suddenly they are a criminal, he then goes on to rape and nearly murder some girl and the only legal consequence of that is that now she is a criminal too. It would be one thing if these were machines being pulled off an assembly line for being defective, but they aren't, they are people being poorly judged by the standards of machines. As demonstrated by Makashima if you are calm you can commit whatever crime you want, and why wouldn't you be calm? The only thing to fear is fear itself, nothing else is against the law.

28:41 It was curious that the video had around 280 dislikes, i didn't understand why at first but now i get it. Based ProfessorViral, i'd say.

Honestly, I forgot that section was in this video. That would explain a little bit of the hate lol

Displacement activities. You were made to hunt and gather anything else distracts from the power process. The unabomber was right about so many things.

Dude you have to stop this XD. Though definitely something I needed right now. Ending a long distance relationship that has been hard on us, and it is that stage in our lives where we are going in different direction. Sometimes all you can do is hope that the person you left is better for having known you sometimes.

I genuinely dislike Your Name, so this felt like a better version of it for me. Not to say YN was a bad movie, just that I like 5CMs ending as a more meaningful take on the idea

@@ProfessorViral I think YN is fine but one thing I noticed after having watched 5cm/s and YN within a few days of each other is that YN almost feels like Shinkai apologizing for 5cm/s being such a gloomy downer. A lot of story and symbolism YN is diametrically opposed to 5cm/s. 5cm/s has 2 people start close and slowly drift apart, YN has 2 people separated by both space and time and slowly come together. 5cm is realistic and focuses on navigating modern society where YN is more fantastical and has a large focus on tradition. In 5cm/s rocket goes up, in YN meteor comes down, haha. Anyway 5cm definitely feels more like an artistic/philosophical statement where YN always felt more like a product to me.

Sometimes it's just not meant to be, no matter how much will, love and determination one have. We all have that moment where we think, what if I did something differently that time? Truth is it was always written that way for us we can only learn from it. Why dwell on the past that we certainly can't change instead of the future that we're shaping. But at the same times no matter how much you moved on and improved that tiny bit of sadness will always be there in the deepest part of your memories. Great video man, This and Garden of words is my fav Makoto Shinkai's works, hearing you break down and analyze the themes is such a treat.

Hard-ass war veteran versus skilled businesswoman/politician. I love them both. But Koko will win because she have better arsenal of equipment and will never play fair.
